A friend of mine turned me on to this cool iPhone app.   Apparently this concept has been around for quite sometime.  It's called Geocaching, and it is basically where people have placed hidden items around posted the gps coordinates of their location and asked you to find them.  It's a great thing to do with your family and because a lot of the items are challenging to get to you can burn some calories in the process.

So how do you find the items.  Well if you are an iPhone owner like myself you can get this great little app from groundspeak.com that list all geocaches near your current location and points the way to them.  It's still not quite as easy as it sounds but it is really challenging and fun.   One GeoCache nearby was filled with all kinds of balls.  The groundspeak geocaching app let us know that when we found that cache we could take a ball out but we had to bring a ball along with us to leave in the cache.  The kids loved this.
